Capability

Size, roundness and finish — held where the assembly needs them

Internal and external cylindrical grinding of shafts, sleeves, bushes and holder features, with clear ownership of every step in the finishing chain and no ambiguity about who holds the allowance.

  • Internal and external cylindrical
  • Allowance confirmed before acceptance
  • Recovery of worn parts assessed
Section A-ACylindrical grinding setup

Best for

Ground fits, concentricity and finish that decide assembly function

You send

Drawing or sample, material condition and the features to be ground

You get back

Ground components measured on size, roundness and finish

How it starts

Allowance and condition confirmed before the job is accepted

The situation

Where grinding jobs go wrong

Most grinding disputes trace back to something agreed too loosely at the start: what condition the part arrived in, and how much material was actually there to remove.

  • 01Pre-machined parts arriving with too little allowance to clean up
  • 02Distortion after heat treatment that nobody planned for
  • 03Concentricity between two diameters that was never explicitly specified
  • 04Surface finish assumed rather than stated on the drawing
  • 05A worn shaft that might be recoverable, if someone assessed it properly

What you get

What working with CMTA actually delivers

Cylindrical grinding and coordinated finishing with verified results on the features that matter.

  • An honest feasibility answer

When you supply pre-machined or hardened parts, we confirm the allowance and condition before accepting the job — so the finished size is actually achievable.

  • The right sequence

Hardening before finish grinding, coatings applied to correct finished dimensions, allowances planned into the turning operation.

  • Measured results

Ground diameters and bores measured for size, with roundness and finish checked against the drawing requirement.

  • A recovery option

Worn shafts, sleeves and bushes assessed for grinding to a new size with a matching mating part, or sleeving, before you scrap them.

Where this stops

Heat treatment, plating and coating are performed by approved partners, with CMTA specifying the requirement, controlling the sequence and inspecting the result.

01

Internal and external cylindrical grinding

Precision cylindrical grinding job work is one of CMTA's established services. External grinding covers shafts, spindles, arbors and mandrels. Internal grinding covers sleeves, bushes, liners and bores in holders and adaptors where concentricity to an outer diameter is what makes the part work.

02

Typical work

  • Hardened shafts with bearing seats ground concentric to each other
  • Sleeves with ground bore and outer diameter for press fits and running clearances
  • Bushes ground after hardening to restore size and finish
  • Holder and adaptor locating diameters ground for runout control
03

Specified by what the assembly needs

Grinding requirements come from function: the size band, roundness and cylindricity that keep a bearing or bush running true, and the surface finish a seal or sliding fit requires. These are agreed from the drawing and measured on the finished part rather than assumed from the process.

04

Allowance and process planning

When CMTA machines the part, grinding allowances are planned into the turning operation with the expected heat-treatment distortion in mind. When you supply pre-machined or hardened parts, we confirm the allowance and condition before accepting the job — the alternative is discovering mid-grind that the finished size cannot be reached.

05

Finishing and heat-treatment coordination

Heat treatment, plating and coating are coordinated through approved partners. CMTA manages the sequence so hardening happens before finish grinding and coatings are applied to the correct finished dimensions.

06

Repair and recovery

Worn or damaged shafts, sleeves and bushes can sometimes be recovered by grinding to a new size with a matching mating part, or by sleeving. Feasibility is confirmed from the sample and the assembly drawing before any work starts, so you know early whether recovery or replacement is the better call.

How it runs

The route from enquiry to verified result

Each stage produces something you can check, and the drawing approval stage is yours to control.

  1. 01

    Assessment

Drawing or sample reviewed; material condition and available allowance confirmed.

  2. 02

    Planning

Grinding allowance, datums and treatment sequence set for the material.

  3. 03

    Grinding

Internal and external cylindrical grinding with in-process measurement.

  4. 04

    Verification

Size, roundness and finish checked and reported as agreed.

The inputs that make a useful review, plus the related pages worth reading first.

What we need for a feasibility review

  • Drawing or sample with the ground features identified
  • Material and condition: soft, hardened, pre-machined
  • Diameter, length and bore details
  • Size tolerance, roundness and surface finish required
  • Quantity and whether pre-machining is included

Send what you have. The technical review identifies the rest.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The questions engineers and buyers ask before sending a drawing. If yours is not here, ask it directly — you will get an engineer's answer, not a brochure.

Still have a question?

Talk to Anita M.N, Managing Partner, or send the drawing and let the review answer it.

What information is needed for a grinding enquiry?

A drawing or sample showing the ground features, the material and its condition, diameter and length, the tolerance, roundness and finish required, and the quantity. Tell us whether parts arrive pre-machined and hardened or need to be made complete.

Do you accept grinding-only work on parts we machined?

Yes, subject to confirming the grinding allowance and material condition before the job is accepted — that check protects both of us.

Which processes are completed in-house?

Machining, grinding, assembly and inspection are CMTA's own work. Where grinding and finishing needs heat treatment, plating or coating, those are coordinated through approved partners and CMTA stays responsible for the finished part. The exact split for your job is confirmed in writing at feasibility review, not left vague.

How are inspection and acceptance requirements agreed?

Before manufacture, we list the dimensions, fits, finish and functional checks that actually decide whether the part works. Those are what get measured, reported and, where relevant, trialled on your machine. Acceptance is judged against that written list rather than a general assurance.
