Case study

When the catalogue holder forced a choice between reach and rigidity

A transmission machining operation where the available holders could not deliver the reach, rigidity and clearance the setup needed at the same time. CMTA engineered holders for the actual operation.

How it starts

Application review with your engineers

01

Customer and operating context

A transmission manufacturer running high-volume machining operations, where each operation is tooled for repeatability across shifts and any compromise in holder fit shows up in finish, insert life or cycle time — multiplied by thousands of parts a day.

02

The technical challenge

The operation required holders matched to a specific machine interface, tool and reach. Standard holders forced a compromise between reach and rigidity, and did not suit the clamping and clearance conditions of the setup.

03

Constraints and acceptance requirements

  • Holders had to fit the existing machine interface without modification
  • Tool location and runout had to be consistent across a set of holders
  • A trial on the production machine was required before any repeat quantity
  • Critical dimensions had to be documented
04

Assessment and proposed solution

CMTA reviewed the application with the customer's engineers, defined the interface, reach and clamping requirements, and proposed a custom holder design. The drawing was issued for approval before manufacture began.

05

Execution

Holder bodies were machined from alloy steel, heat treated and finish ground on the locating and clamping features, with critical dimensions inspected before dispatch.

06

Trial and release

A first set was trialled on the production machine. Feedback was incorporated into the final drawing revision, and the holders were released for repeat supply against that revision — so every later holder matches the one that was proven.

07

Result

The imported holders were quoted at roughly four times budget. CMTA supplied custom holders at about a quarter of that cost, and production started on time.

08

What made it work

  • Starting from the application rather than a catalogue
  • Drawing approval before manufacture
  • A production trial before repeat release
  • Ground locating features for consistency across the set

Outcome

Locally manufactured holders at a quarter of the imported cost, letting production start on schedule — a 75% reduction in tooling cost, as published by CMTA.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The questions engineers and buyers ask before sending a drawing. If yours is not here, ask it directly — you will get an engineer's answer, not a brochure.

Still have a question?

Talk to Anita M.N, Managing Partner, or send the drawing and let the review answer it.

What problem was the customer facing?

Catalogue holders forced a compromise between reach, rigidity and clearance on a transmission component operation.

What did CMTA engineer?

Application-specific custom tool holders designed to the machine interface, tool and reach, approved on drawing, trialled in production and then supplied in repeat quantities.

How was the result verified?

Through inspection against the approved drawing and trial or fitment at the customer, with results recorded. Quantified outcomes are published on this page only once the customer has confirmed the figures — which is why you will not find percentages here yet.

Can CMTA assess a similar requirement?

Yes. Send your drawing, sample or problem statement for custom tool holders and the review follows the same process described on this page.
