Know what your spindle is actually doing

Before you blame the holder, the insert or the operator, measure the machine. Ground test mandrels for alignment and runout checks, and balancing mandrels for wheels and cutters.

  • Common spindle and tailstock tapers
  • Test lengths for standard checks
  • Balancing mandrels for wheel bores
Section A-ATest mandrel, ground

Best for

Machine inspection, maintenance checks and wheel balancing

You send

Spindle or tailstock taper, length and accuracy required

You get back

Ground mandrels with runout and taper contact reported

How it starts

Test length matched to the check you need to perform

The situation

Diagnose the machine before buying tooling

A surprising share of tooling complaints resolve into a machine condition problem that nobody has measured.

  • 01Persistent runout blamed on holders that were never checked
  • 02Alignment never verified after a crash or a rebuild
  • 03Taper condition unknown across an ageing machine fleet
  • 04Wheel and cutter assemblies never balanced properly

What you get

What working with CMTA actually delivers

Mandrels for spindle alignment, runout and taper checks, and for balancing.

  • Confirmed compatibility

The machine interface, tool interface and working envelope are checked before manufacture, so mandrels arrive ready to run.

  • Standard, custom or replaced

Supplied from range where a standard suits the job, made to order where it does not, or reproduced from your sample where the original is unavailable.

  • Ground where it counts

Locating and clamping features are ground and the dimensions governing runout and repeatability are inspected before dispatch.

  • A local replenishment route

Repeat orders and modifications are handled in Bengaluru rather than through an import cycle.

01

What it is and where it runs

A test mandrel is a ground bar with a precision taper and a cylindrical test surface, used with a dial indicator to check spindle alignment, taper runout and axis parallelism during machine inspection and after maintenance. Balancing mandrels carry wheels or cutters on balancing stands. Both are part of CMTA's manufactured range.

02

Types and configurations

Morse, BT, ISO and other tapers with test lengths to suit common machine checks; balancing mandrels for standard wheel bores. Verified table to follow.

03

Confirming compatibility

Match the taper to the spindle or tailstock and the test length to the check being performed.

04

Material, treatment and inspection

Hardened and stabilised steel with taper and test diameter ground, and runout and taper contact inspected and reported.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The questions engineers and buyers ask before sending a drawing. If yours is not here, ask it directly — you will get an engineer's answer, not a brochure.

Still have a question?

Talk to Anita M.N, Managing Partner, or send the drawing and let the review answer it.

What information is required to select test mandrels?

Spindle or tailstock taper, Mandrel length and diameter, Accuracy required, Application (test or balancing), Quantity. If you are unsure of any of these, send a photograph of the current holder and the machine nameplate — that is usually enough for us to confirm the rest.

Can CMTA customise test mandrels?

Yes. Variations in length, reach, interface, clamping or tool size are manufactured to order. Fully custom variants go through the custom tool holder process, with a drawing approved by you before manufacture.

How is compatibility confirmed?

Against three things: the machine interface, the tool interface and the working envelope. Where an existing item is being replaced, matching it to your sample or original part number is the most reliable route of all.

Can CMTA manufacture from a sample instead of a drawing?

Yes. A drawing is manufactured to its stated tolerances; a sample is measured and reverse engineered into a drawing for your approval, and then manufactured.
