Rigid tooling for heavy cuts on big diameters

Vertical turret lathes take deep, interrupted cuts on components that are expensive to scrap. The holder has to stay put. Ours are matched to your turret slot, cutting direction and reach.

  • Straight, offset and angled bodies
  • Made to your ram or turret slot
  • Obsolete holders reproduced from sample
Section A-AVTL holder profile

Best for

Heavy facing, turning and boring on vertical turret lathes

You send

Turret or ram details, tool shank, reach and cutting direction

You get back

Holders matched to your machine, inspected before dispatch

How it starts

Compatibility confirmed before manufacture

The situation

Common VTL tooling problems

On a vertical lathe, the consequences of a marginal holder show up on a component that already has many hours in it.

  • 01Chatter on facing cuts at larger diameters
  • 02A holder chosen for the biggest job, used on all of them
  • 03Worn holder seats blamed on the insert
  • 04Clearance problems against chuck jaws on facing passes
  • 05An original holder that is no longer available from anyone

What you get

What working with CMTA actually delivers

Holders for vertical turning, facing and boring, matched to your turret and tooling.

  • Confirmed compatibility

The machine interface, tool interface and working envelope are checked before manufacture, so holders arrive ready to run.

  • Standard, custom or replaced

Supplied from range where a standard suits the job, made to order where it does not, or reproduced from your sample where the original is unavailable.

  • Ground where it counts

Locating and clamping features are ground and the dimensions governing runout and repeatability are inspected before dispatch.

  • A local replenishment route

Repeat orders and modifications are handled in Bengaluru rather than through an import cycle.

01

What it is and where it runs

A VTL tool holder mounts the cutting tool on the ram or turret of a vertical turret lathe and holds it rigidly under the heavy, interrupted loads that come with large-diameter turning and facing. CMTA manufactures VTL holders for HMT and other vertical lathes used in heavy engineering, machine tool building and large-component job shops.

02

Types and configurations

Straight, offset and angled holders for turning, facing and boring, in the shank sizes used on common VTL rams and turrets. The verified size table is published once confirmed by CMTA; in the meantime, send your turret or ram details and we will confirm the fit directly.

03

Confirming compatibility

Fit is defined by the ram or turret slot, the clamping method and the tool shank. Reach and offset follow from the workpiece diameter, the chuck and the feature being cut, so the holder clears the job without carrying more overhang than the cut requires.

04

Selection mistakes worth avoiding

  • Choosing reach for the largest job and accepting chatter on every smaller one
  • Ignoring cutting direction, which changes the offset needed
  • Running a worn holder seat and blaming the insert for the finish
  • Overlooking clearance to the chuck jaws on facing cuts
05

Material, treatment and inspection

Holder bodies are made from alloy steel, heat treated and ground on the locating and clamping faces, with critical dimensions inspected before dispatch.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The questions engineers and buyers ask before sending a drawing. If yours is not here, ask it directly — you will get an engineer's answer, not a brochure.

Still have a question?

Talk to Anita M.N, Managing Partner, or send the drawing and let the review answer it.

What information is required to select vtl tool holders?

Machine interface and turret or ram slot details, Shank or tool geometry, Reach required, Cutting direction, Clearance to chuck and workpiece. If you are unsure of any of these, send a photograph of the current holder and the machine nameplate — that is usually enough for us to confirm the rest.

Can CMTA customise vtl tool holders?

Yes. Variations in length, reach, interface, clamping or tool size are manufactured to order. Fully custom variants go through the custom tool holder process, with a drawing approved by you before manufacture.

How is compatibility confirmed?

Against three things: the machine interface, the tool interface and the working envelope. Where an existing item is being replaced, matching it to your sample or original part number is the most reliable route of all.

Can CMTA manufacture from a sample instead of a drawing?

Yes. A drawing is manufactured to its stated tolerances; a sample is measured and reverse engineered into a drawing for your approval, and then manufactured.
