Customer and operating context
Castcraft required a stainless steel shaft manufactured to drawing for an application where ground diameters, concentricity and surface finish were critical to assembly and operation.
Case study
Stainless work-hardens under the tool and loads grinding wheels differently from carbon steel. Holding size, roundness and finish on the ground diameters is a process-planning problem before it is a machining one.

Castcraft required a stainless steel shaft manufactured to drawing for an application where ground diameters, concentricity and surface finish were critical to assembly and operation.
Stainless steel work-hardens in turning and loads grinding wheels differently from carbon steel. Holding size, roundness and finish on the ground diameters required the allowances and parameters to be planned for the material rather than carried over from routine work.
The drawing was reviewed, grinding allowances set for the material, and turning and grinding parameters planned to manage heat and wheel loading.
The shaft was turned with the planned allowances and finish ground on the critical diameters, with in-process measurement. Ground features were inspected for size, roundness and finish against the drawing, documented as required, then dispatched with protection against handling damage.
The shaft was delivered to drawing. Data on tolerances achieved, turnaround and repeat orders is published only after Castcraft confirmation.

The stainless steel shaft delivered to the required ground finish after other vendors could not, so sub-assembly restarted without further delay.

Talk to Anita M.N, Managing Partner, or send the drawing and let the review answer it.
The need for a stainless steel shaft with ground diameters held to size, roundness and finish, in a material that makes both turning and grinding more demanding.
A stainless steel shaft machined and precision ground to drawing, inspected and documented.

Yes. Send your drawing, sample or problem statement for ground shafts and components and the review follows the same process described on this page.
