Inspection fixture planning

An inspection fixture exists to answer one question quickly and repeatably: is this part acceptable? It should locate from the part's functional datums — the surfaces that matter in the assembly — which are not always the ones the machining fixture used.

01

Inspect from function, not from manufacture

If the inspection fixture locates the part exactly as the machining fixture did, it will tend to confirm that the machine did what it was told. That is useful, but it is not the same as confirming the part will work.

Locating from the functional datums instead means the measurement reflects how the part sits in its assembly, which is what the customer actually cares about.

02

Decide what is being checked, and why

  • Characteristics that control fit or function, which must be checked
  • Characteristics that are historically prone to drift, which are worth monitoring
  • Characteristics that are stable and non-critical, which can be sampled or left to the machining record
  • Attributes better checked by gauge than by measurement — present or absent, passes or does not
03

Repeatability of the fixture is part of the measurement

A fixture that positions the part slightly differently each time adds its own variation to every reading. Before trusting results, load and measure the same known part several times, by more than one person.

If that spread is a significant share of the tolerance being checked, the fixture is consuming the tolerance it is meant to be policing.

04

Speed determines whether it gets used

An inspection fixture that takes a long time to load will be used for the first part and then quietly skipped. One that takes seconds will be used through the shift, which is where its value lies.

This argues for checking fewer characteristics well rather than everything slowly, with full measurement reserved for first-off and periodic audit.

05

Gauges versus measurement

Where the question is genuinely pass or fail, a gauge answers faster and with less operator skill than a measurement does. Where you need to see drift coming, a measured value is more informative because it shows the trend before the part fails.

A common arrangement uses gauges for in-process checks and measurement at first-off and at intervals, which gives both speed and visibility.

What to prepare

  • The drawing with functional datums and critical characteristics marked
  • Which characteristics are checked every part, sampled, or first-off only
  • Where the check happens: at the machine, at a bench, or in a metrology area
  • Who performs it and with what training
  • How results are recorded, and what happens when one is out of tolerance

Frequently asked questions

The questions engineers and buyers ask before sending a drawing. If yours is not here, ask it directly — you will get an engineer's answer, not a brochure.

Still have a question?

Should the inspection fixture be made by the same supplier as the machining fixture?

Not necessarily, and there is an argument for independence. What matters more is that it locates from the functional datums and that its own repeatability has been established.

How often should the fixture itself be checked?

Periodically, against a known reference, because locators wear. Agree the interval when the fixture is commissioned rather than leaving it to be noticed.

Can one fixture check several variants?

Often yes, with interchangeable elements. Make variant selection positive and obvious, since checking a part against the wrong configuration is worse than not checking it.

Does an inspection fixture replace a full dimensional report?

No. It provides fast, repeatable confirmation between full measurements. First-off and periodic reports still establish the complete picture.
