Sample to approved drawing

The drawing is where reverse engineering becomes something you own and can reorder against. It should distinguish what was measured directly from what was reconstructed, state the material decision and its basis, and be reviewed by someone who knows the application before it is approved.

01

What the drawing has to carry

  • Geometry, with the features that control function identified
  • Material and treatment, with a note on whether these were tested or assumed
  • Tolerances proposed for the critical features, and the reasoning where it is not obvious
  • Surface finish where it matters
  • A clear statement of which dimensions were measured and which were reconstructed
02

Measured versus reconstructed

On a worn sample these are genuinely different kinds of information, and collapsing them into a single set of numbers hides the uncertainty. A mounting face that never wore is a measurement; a journal diameter that has run for years is an inference.

Marking the difference lets you direct your review where it matters, and gives you something concrete to check against the mating part.

03

Your review is the point of the exercise

The supplier knows the sample. You know the application, the assembly and the history. Approval is where those two bodies of knowledge meet, and it is not a formality.

Check the reconstructed features against whatever independent evidence you hold: the mating component, an assembly drawing, a second example of the same part from another machine.

04

Questions worth asking before signing

  • Which dimensions are you least confident about, and why?
  • What material decision was made, and on what basis?
  • Has anything been deliberately changed from the original, and why?
  • What would you expect to fail first on this part?
  • What would you want to check on the first-off?
05

Approve the revision, not the conversation

Agreements reached by phone or email have a way of not reaching the drawing. The approved item should be a specific revision, and any change after that should produce a new one.

This matters most at reorder, often years later, when nobody remembers what was agreed verbally.

06

After approval

The first-off should be inspected against the drawing and, where possible, trial-fitted. Feedback from that trial belongs back on the drawing before repeat parts are made.

Then keep it somewhere you will find it. The value of the exercise is largely in never having to repeat it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The questions engineers and buyers ask before sending a drawing. If yours is not here, ask it directly — you will get an engineer's answer, not a brochure.

Still have a question?

Talk to Anita M.N, Managing Partner, or send the drawing and let the review answer it.

How long does the drawing stage take?

It depends on the part's complexity and how much reconstruction is needed. Ask for the assessment and drawing stage to be quoted separately from manufacture, so the sequence is visible.

Can I get the drawing without ordering the part?

Often yes, as a separate piece of work. Whether it makes sense depends on whether you intend to manufacture elsewhere or simply want the documentation.

What format should I expect?

Agree it up front. A 2D drawing is what gets approved and quoted against; a 3D model is useful alongside. Ask for both if you have use for both.

What if I disagree with a reconstructed dimension?

Say so — that is precisely what the approval step is for. You may hold evidence the supplier does not, such as the mating part or the original application.
